Meet the Coaches
-
Arturo Bueno
Arturo is a Level 2 NCCP Certified Pickleball Instructor and the first Pickleball Professional Certified Match Analyst in Canada. With over 1,500 hours of coaching experience and more than 1,100 students taught, Arturo brings a depth of expertise that sets him apart in the pickleball scene.
Originally from a tennis background, Arturo discovered pickleball over four years ago and has immersed himself in the sport ever since. His transition from player to coach was driven by a passion to understand the game at its core — not just how it's played, but why.
Arturo’s coaching philosophy is built on customized learning, strong foundational knowledge, and strategic adaptability. He has designed and refined over 80 proprietary drills and progressions, transforming abstract, high-level game principles into clear, practical lessons. His approach simplifies complex concepts for players of all skill levels — whether you’re new to the sport or transitioning from another racquet game.
He is also known for his innovative “Non-Confrontation Matrix”, a framework that contrasts traditional instruction with his own evolving methodology — one that reflects the demands of today’s faster, more dynamic game. While other methods may be rooted in the past, Arturo’s coaching adapts with the sport's continuous evolution.
Arturo previously served as Head Coach at both MNP Community & Sport Centre and the University of Calgary, where he played a key role in establishing and shaping their pickleball programs.
His coaching style is clean, professional, and deeply analytical — grounded in the concept of Zugzwang, where every move matters, and intention drives performance.
At YYC Pickleball, Arturo is more than a coach — he’s a visionary redefining how we learn, train, and play the game.

Jaleesa Johnston
Jaleesa is a Level 2 NCCP Certified Pickleball Instructor with over eight years of experience playing and coaching. A former competitive soccer player at the University of Lethbridge, she made the switch to pickleball after stepping away from soccer following a torn ACL. Fully recovered, Jaleesa was encouraged by her surgeon to explore lower-impact sports—and it was her soccer coach who first introduced her to pickleball. She was instantly hooked, bringing her athleticism and competitive spirit to the court.
Now returning to compete at the pro level, Jaleesa’s journey from high-level athlete to instructor gives her a unique lens as a coach. Calm and composed on the court, she’s often described as “the counselor of pickleball”—known for her supportive nature, easygoing personality, and ability to make learning feel fun and approachable.
Her coaching is rooted in creating a positive, inclusive environment where players can enjoy the game while steadily progressing. Whether you're stepping onto the court for the first time or refining advanced skills, Jaleesa helps you feel confident and capable every step of the way.
She believes that pickleball is truly for everyone—and it’s her mission to help players of all backgrounds fall in love with the sport, just as she did.
Look out for her upcoming classes and clinics—and don’t be surprised if you find yourself saying, “I want to play like Jaleesa.”

Claire White
Claire is a Level 1 IPTPA Certified Pickleball Instructor, a Level 1 NCCP Pickleball Instructor, and a Certified Level 1 Pickleball Referee.
It did not take Claire, a lifelong athlete, long to become addicted to Pickleball. Early in 2019, she was asked to help run a series of pickleball clinics which led her to earning her coaching certifications. Before pickleball, Claire’s primary sports were tennis and badminton. Previously, she coached youth soccer and instructed swim lessons.
For many years now, she has played pickleball competitively and has medaled tournaments across North America, including the Canadian Nationals, the Alberta and Saskatchewan Provincials, and Pickleball Canada’s Western Regional Championship. Claire’s pickleball teaching has been ongoing for more than four years, including clinics, small groups, and private lessons at the beginner, novice, and intermediate levels. She thoroughly enjoys introducing pickleball to new players.
